Whatever the size of your Great Get Together, we support your efforts to strengthen community and build connection. We know that some of you have felt like you don’t know what to do this year, so we thought we’d help you with that.
Small acts of kindness can have a massive impact, especially at this time when many people have been isolated or lonely. Much of the kindness we have seen throughout the crisis fits perfectly with the purpose of The Great Get Together which is to bring people together and celebrate community. Here are some ways people across the country are planning to celebrate over June 19th-21st.
In Chelmsford, Susie is hosting a virtual quiz; in Solihull, Elizabeth is hosting a virtual bake off; in Huddersfield, Dinah is giving out free books to her community. These are all amazing, innovative ways to take part in this year’s Great Get Together. In Edinburgh, Fiona, whose household is shielding from Covid-19, will be having a cup of tea and some cake, taking the time to reflect and remember the life and legacy of Jo Cox.
Of course, there are many other ways to join in with The Great Get Together. We’ve been astounded by the way people everywhere have adapted their “traditional” Great Get Together ideas to the circumstances we find ourselves in. In Yorkshire, hundreds will take part in the Run for Jo. This was one of the key events over previous Great Get Together weekends but cannot go ahead in its usual format. Instead, it will be going ahead virtually, with hundreds of people connecting via Strava to run together whilst physically apart. In Scarborough, We Are Scarborough and Say Hello Coast have joined forces to organise three competitions for this year’s Great Get Together. This takes inspiration from Scarborough Fair which has brought people together on the Yorkshire coast for centuries. It will continue to do so as people compete in postcard, song, and art competitions.
Over the next few weeks we will be sharing our ideas, big and small, for this year’s Great Get Together. Whatever the size of your Great Get Together activity, we would love to hear about it. Please let us know how you are joining in. Tell us your plans here.
