The Dunmow Flitch Trials

An ancient unique local tradition giving rise to the description of Great Dunmow as a 'Flitch Town' dating back to the 14th Century. Held every four years but postponed since 2020 due to Covid - The Flitch Trials are finally back on Saturday 9th July 2022. A reference to the Dunmow Flitch can even be found in Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Tale. The Trials exist to award a flitch (otherwise known as a side or half a pig) to married couples from anywhere in the World, if they can satisfy the Judge and Jury of 6 maidens and 6 bachelors that in 'twelvemonth and a day' they have 'not wisht themselves unmarried again'. Three sets of Trials take place in the marquee during the morning, afternoon and evening and tickets are available now via the website. The day will be sure to be filled with good humour, fun and legal propriety in equal measure. Come and be a part of continuing on the unique and very special tradition for hundreds more years to come!
